The Physics of Dorian Gray

The Premise

The Physics of Dorian Gray is an assignment for the course DA9012: Media Art Nexus. The course revolves around creating a video-based artwork to provide content for the eponymous media screen. As explained by and excerpt from the Media Art Nexus website:

“Media Art Nexus or MAN is a community public art project, conceived with the vision of bringing art to people. Since 2016 till present, MAN has been providing a platform for curating and promoting new media art content done by emerging and established local Singaporean and international artists. The 15 meters by 2 meters LED wall plays 3,640 hours of original content per year by more than 500 artists. It is the one-of-a-kind, non-commercial urban media screen of its kind in Singapore.

Integrated into a curriculum that is taught at the School of Art, Design, and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, the project continues to thrive most recently on interdisciplinary collaborations in art and science with [many renowned institutions].”

The theme for DA9012 in 2019 was “Quantum Entanglement” — a governing principle of quantum physics — and our brief is to represent the theory in a visual manner. It would also be beneficial to tie the theory to existing narratives that could serve as an analogy that simplifies the concept.

I have thus chosen to use Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray as the basis for this project. The video was mostly created using Photoshop’s timeline function, with Adobe Premiere Pro used for final touches.

The process documentation below — a digital pdf created as an accompanying collateral for the artwork — explains the project in more detail. Read it directly on issuu here.
